For the past two years we have joined a growing movement to join in a challenge to grow (or forage) as much of our own food as we can for 100 days. This challenge was inspired from the Rhodes family on Youtube (check out their channel here!). We’ve felt that joining in the challenge keeps us inspired to stay passionate throughout the growing season.
This is my official invite to all of you to join us this year for the 100 Days of Growing Food Challenge! We are officially starting next Sunday, May 10th. For our area, the general rule of thumb for planting warm weather crops is after America’s Mother’s Day. You can really start with whatever date suites your growing season!
You do not have to be experienced in gardening, animal husbandry, or growing anything to join the Challenge! We hope you can take this time to try out something new and just plant something! Whether you’re an experienced gardener, a newbie, or you’re just starting out raising chickens we hope to share in your experiences! Feel free to check out our previous blogs on starting a Victory Garden beginning with Call to Action.
We will share our joys and sorrows, successes and failures with you.
For the next several days leading up to the start of The Challenge, we will be sharing some garden stories and spaces from friends and family!
We would love to hear about your journey, too! Share your journey on IG with #GrowingWithShumans100

“I’m Laura Hixenbaugh, and I started gardening when my dream of moving to the country was realized in 2008. My first attempts were failures, and then I gave up for a few years. Two years ago, we built raised boxes which were a success! I am lucky to live in an area highly populated with Amish farmers, so I do purchase a lot of my canning vegetables from my favorite Amish family. However, I grow my own beans and cucumbers for canning, as well as potatoes and carrots! I also grow herbs, such as chives, basil and oregano. I also raise chickens! They are layers, and I sell the eggs to my co-workers who want farm fresh eggs! Our newest addition is ducks-we just received 7 White Peking ducks from my brother. I hope to be able to sell those eggs as well. Our future on our farmstead is ever-growing. We hope to add honeybees, fruit trees and medicinal herbs. I’ve been doing a lot of reading! Unfortunately, I do not have a connection to anyone who has the same passions for homesteading as I do in my area, so blogs, books and Youtube videos have become my go-to source. There is so much satisfaction to growing and raising your own food.”

Interesting. I would like to try the 100 day challenge. Not sure if I can stay focused though. I get so distracted. But I will give it a shot.
You should, for sure!! <3 Just plant!
I feel so honored to be the first featured! I do love my life here on our homestead. I’m going to try the 100 day challenge. During this time, I can’t think of a better focus!
I’m so glad we’re friends and can share in each other’s journey!❤❤❤
