Have you ever had a string of days where everything seems to go wrong?
It always seems to happen to us when we start getting in a really good groove. The boy’s routine is working well, chores have been managed with spare time to do hobbies, and everything seems to be rolling smoothly…
And then, BAM! Out of the blue, trials and tribulations start coming from all directions.
- A raccoon found its sneaky way into our chicken coop early one morning this weekend. Two of our guinea hens were killed in the invasion.
- Packets of seeds were scattered all over the basement.
- Moles have started tearing up our backyard.
- Bryce has been feeling sick.
- The robot vacuum (Stirling named “DeeDee”) found a fresh pile of dog droppings…
On it could go. No matter how inconvenient those were, everything came to a halt when Declan got a hand injury Monday afternoon. We frantically packed up and headed into the emergency room.
For four hours we waited while various nurses, doctors, and radiology technicians came in to check out our little boy’s hand.
Waited.
Worried.
Prayed.
All while trying to keep two rambunctious boys entertained in a tiny room where they weren’t allowed to touch anything. (Definitely thankful for the double stroller we found at a garage sale last summer!)
Thankfully, no bones were broken and no treatment needed. Just time for healing.
Since then, I’ve been having some terrible neck pain – an old injury flaring up (probably due to stress).
Despite it all, you know what? God is still good. We aren’t being punished for not volunteering at church enough. God isn’t angry with us and He hasn’t forsaken us.
The Bible tells us,
The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.
Psalm 145:9
When bad things happen to us, it’s not a sign that we have somehow fallen out of God’s grace. When you think about it, how selfish is it for us to think that our actions could somehow lessen the price Christ paid for us on the cross?
If you are dealing with feelings that God is punishing you or has abandoned you, I just want to encourage you to remember that God is always good – even when we are going through hard times.
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Psalm 27:13
Amen
