Adventuring in the Frozen Tundra

Today started off as any other day. Well, slightly messier than usual. Declan got ahold of some sunflower butter and decided to paint himself with it.

But something extraordinary happened while we were bundled up to tackle livestock chores.

A little voice tugged on my winter coat and asked, “Momma? Can we go on an adventure?”

As if I could even consider saying no, with the sparkle in his bright blue eyes. So adventure we did.

Journey to the Magnificent Mountain

adventure by Stirling and Declan, embellished by Momma

A small group of explorers set out in search of a grand adventure. They were dedicated to work together, overcome hardships, and go to the brink of exhaustion to find the Magnificent Mountain and scale to it’s icy peak.

During their journey, they befriended a wild wolf who joined them throughout their travels and kept the ravenous wolves and bears at bay.

Emotions soared as the youngest member of the fellowship lost his footing and tumbled into the deep snow. They learned that to never leave a man behind, and together they made it to shelter under the thick coverage of evergreen trees.

With spirits renewed (and hats and gloves fixed) the group pushed on. In the distance, they could see the foothills of their query, the Magnificent Mountain. And the climb to the peak began.

More hardship faced them as the icy slopes caused them to tumble back down and lose their footing. But teamwork and diligence persevered and they earned the title, “King of the Mountain!” (Which lead to a falling roll back down.)

Back at their homesite, they were rewarded with a warm meal and hot chocolate flowed freely for all. A warm bed was welcomed for their weary bones.

Snowy Days

You know, I never thought being a mom would be nearly as much fun as it is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s exhausting, emotionally draining some days, and pushes me to frustration I never knew possible.

Days like today, where we drop some of the responisbilities and expectations for the day to just explore and let their little imaginations run wild, are priceless.

After our grand adventure, Stirling was hungry for more information on polar bears, and questions on wolves. This allowed us a good chance to find an Alaskan documentary on Netflix as we warmed up.

I’ve been so focused on planning projects for spring, I’m glad this new wave of winter came by so we can cherish some of the beauty that this season brings.

What is your favorite winter weather activity? I would love to hear about it in the comments!

  1. This post really makes me envy your snow! We’ve barely seen a flake all season and when it has it melted the very next day! The boys look like they are having a blast too, they’re lucky to have a mom who tags along in such adventures 🙂

    1. We’ve hardly had any all winter! lol Last weekend was in the mid-50’s and I was doing garden projects! And I’m very grateful to have them to drag me outside! <3

  2. As a kid around 10-13 I had friends in the neighborhood. This was a time when it was safe for us to walk up and down the street together without adults. We would spend one ice skatingvat the the gitls pond, then the jext day go a few houses down and sled.

As an adult, I love bundling up, taking my husbands hand and going for a long walk in a snow fall full of hige snow flakes.

Then, when we had a wood burner, cuddle up in front of the fire.
