Countdown to 100 Days of Growing Food: Erin

Talk about maximizing space!

Erin and her family graciously welcomed me into their home earlier this spring while I was on my mommy vacation. I was amazed at how much food they are able to produce on their property! It was at Erin’s home that I first experienced the deliciousness of the loquat fruit – which is hands down the best subtropical fruit. Erin and her family are a great example of how maximize your property to support your family.

Make sure to check out Laura, Stacey, Amber, Annie, and Katelyn’s stories from earlier this week!

Erin

“Early on in life I have found memories of my family cooking fresh meals from a garden, canning gallons of fresh salsa or Friday night fish fries from last weekends catch. I knew when I started my family I wanted to not only create those moments for my girls, but better myself as a person, a mother and a wife.

Over the past three years we have taken steps towards becoming more self sufficient. On no more than a quarter of an acer we have chickens, rabbits, honeybees, several fruit trees and this year I will start to refocus on a large back to eden garden. I try to choose things that can all benefit one another and we are trying to make every little square inch count.

We have bigger plans to one day expand and buy more land, but while we are here I am creating a foundation of trials and errors, along with successes to be able to learn and sharpen our skills. My goal is to help inspire my friends, family and others to make what they have work and knowing that starting something small is better than not starting or trying at all.”
