DIY Disinfecting Spray

We all are searching for ways to stay healthy and safe in light of current events. I do want to encourage anyone reading that it is OKAY to want to be prudent in the health of yourself and your family; however, try not to give in to a spirit of fear. (Read more about my thoughts on that here.)

A few days ago, I posted a DIY Thieves hand sanitizer that we have been using when we do not have access to wash our hands in public. My first choice is to stay home, but when we do need to make a run to the store, I require the boys to sit in the cart for safety. While planning for our grocery trip this morning, I wanted to make sure I had a disinfecting spray for the cart.

Usually, I use my premade Thieves spray and a Norwex cloth to wipe the cart down but am running low on my spray and haven’t been able to order more.

The EPA released a list of approved disinfectants recently that kill the Coronavirus (and many other germs as well). A solution of 60% alcohol is on that list.

For this disinfectant to work, the surface needs to be saturated with the cleaner.

My routine is to grab a cart, wipe it down with a Norwex cloth and water, and then thoroughly spray with my Thieves/Alcohol spray before putting my reusable bags and boys in.

What you need:

Glass spray bottle (I made one of each for different situations)

91% isopropyl alcohol

  • 3.5 oz
  • 15.5 oz

Thieves essential oil

  • 5-10 drops (For the small bottle)
  • 15-20 drops (For the large bottle)

Peppermint essential oil

  • 5-10 drops (For the small bottle)
  • 15-20 drops (For the large bottle)

Small funnel

Directions:

  • Into your chosen bottle, pour the appropriate amount of alcohol.
  • Add in your essential oils.
  • Screw on your sprayer tightly and shake well!
  • Coat your surface well and allow to air dry.

Always, always, always test products with essential oils on a small portion of skin prior to use. Essential oils are based from plants; however, they are super concentrated. Make sure your mixture is fully incorporated and that you do not have any sensitivities to the oils you chose before using regularly. Take care if using on children as their skin is much more sensitive than an adult.

If you’re looking for a set of the Norwex Enviro Cloths, I have a good friend who works with the company and would be happy to help you! You can find them on her website at:

*Because of the nature of the Envirocloths, I would wipe the surface down first with your cloth and water, then follow up with your homemade Thieves Spray.*

Definitely stay home if you’re able! But use your spray and hand sanitizer if you do have to go out. Wash your hands often.
