DIY Flaxseed Gel

If you’re searching for a non-toxic, zero waste, and budget friendly gel – flaxseed gel may be the answer you’re looking for!

Since going on a committed 3 month “No-Poo” journey, I’ve been searching for alternative hair products I can make at home that won’t break the bank (or my hair!). After spending a few days scouring the internet and talking to friends who are either super crunchy or do the curly girl method, the homemade flaxseed gel kept coming up in conversation. This gel traps in moisture while helping to manage frizz.

This recipe is super frugal as well! You can make a batch to control your curls for around $.16-$.20 depending on what essential oils or preservatives you add in.

Flaxseed is packed with nutrients, fats, and fiber. It’s not only beneficial to your body but also to your hair! This gel can be used to style and as a hydrating mask to be washed out. It’s simple to make and zero waste. Once you’ve made your gel, use the seeds in baking or to feed the birds! (Our chickens loved getting an extra treat!)

I’ve only gotten the chance to use it once so far, but was quite surprised with the results! I definitely applied too much for my hair, but I’m excited to test it out further in the next few weeks!

*Makes between 1 cup and 1 1/2 cup of gel*

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Mix your flaxseeds and water in a pot and bring to a boil.
  • Turn down to medium/low heat. I find this took longer for the flax to gel, but I could make sure it didn’t gel too much.
  • Continue to stir and monitor the consistency of your mixture. You will first notice the frothy bubbles at the top. That’s a good indicator you’re heading in the right direction!
  • You want the mixture to be similar to egg whites. (Or snot. Definitely reminds me of snot.)
  • Once consistency is reached, remove from heat and strain. Use your rubber spatula to push more of the gel out of the flaxseed.
  • Allow the gel to cool for 15-20 minutes.
  • Add in your chosen preservatives and essential oils and mix well.
  • I chose to add in 30 drops Citrus Fresh from Young Living, 1/4 teaspoon of Ascorbic Acid, and 2 tsp of Vitamin E. Even with these preservatives, I’m still planning on keeping the gel in the fridge but am hoping to extend it’s life a little longer!
  • Store refrigerated for up to two weeks. I keep ours in upcycled ghee jars but you could also use a widemouth ball jar.

To Use:

  • Apply small amounts to wet hair if using to style for curls.
  • If using as a hair mask, apply generously and allow mask to sit on your hair for 30 minutes. Wash out as normal.

Bonus! I think this would make a super fun, toxin-free slime alternative! It’s super goopy but not overly sticky. Easy cleanup, easy to make! I may just make an extra batch for the boys to play with!
