Edda’s Offspring: Welcome Earth Side!

You know that feeling you get when something is going to happen? It’s like an itch but you can’t quite scratch it.

That’s how I woke up this morning. I immediately assumed it must mean Edda had her babies! But after rushing down to the goat house was greeted with her goofy self as she awaited her morning treats. Sans babies.

I can’t say I was disappointed. Oona’s twins have started with the baby goad shenanigans of jumping and twirling about. Both of her girls are super playful and fight over who gets snuggles first! Check out their Surprise entrance yesterday!

I had to work today.

So naturally, if anything is going to happen, it would be while I was at work. (Please don’t take I *had* to work today the wrong way. I was blessed to work today, but… baby goats!)

And wouldn’t you know, LITERALLY, as the boys were packed into the van and I was just running down to grab a book I left at the goat house (Pat Coleby’s, “Natural Goat Care”) and I found them!

If you guessed she was having twins, you were right! Two healthy kids joined us this morning, a male and female.

The Doe

She is so stinking sweet and will climb right up into your lap.

This handsome fella is quite vocal and is the only male of all the kids!

Stirling’s favorite out of all the babies is the male, “He looks like a baby cow!” And Declan has been calling for it as, “Moo moo!” But we are all quite smitten with all the babies!

Edda is doing well and didn’t need any assistance with their birth. She is so gentle and attentive to ALL the babies, grooming and allowing them all to nurse. (Oona is also doing well; however, she has no patience for any kids other than her own. Solidarity.)

What’s the plan?

We plan on selling the babies at some point, but I’ve decided the light doe from Edda’s babies will stay. I hope to allow them to be dam raised (raised by their momma’s) and will treat them holistically as much as possible. Similarly to how we raise our own children, I’m not against Western medicine and pharmaceuticals; however, believe they should be reserved when other avenues have been exhausted.

As mentioned earlier, I’ve been reading, “Natural Goat Care” which focuses on proper nutrition and well rounded options of supplements for the goats to choose from as their bodies need.

Another book on my list is to reference is, “The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable”, by Juliette de Bairacli Levy.

I also plan on purchasing a copy of, “Essential Oils Animal Desk Reference” as I’ve heard many good things about it!

If you have any good resources for raising animals holistically, I would love to hear about them!

Also looking for name suggestions for our babies! Oona’s two fawn does, Edda’s black and white buck, and her snowy doe! (Please, nothing from Frozen! lol)
