The Eve of Christmas Eve

There is something so magical about the Christmas season. The lights, the music, the rich food. The laughter heard from families gathered around the dining room table. Old friends coming together and catching up after many years. Warm gloves with hot chocolate after sledding or making snowmen. Snuggling up on the couch watching a Christmas movie.

It always feels a little bittersweet; enjoying the beautiful weather, while missing the snow. While I love the spring and summer months, there is something that also speaks to my soul when the snow falls. Covering all the dark and gray with white. The way the trees sparkle and shine with ice and evergreens stand tall and proud – a flash of color and warmth in the snow. The quiet that you can experience only after a snow falls.

I’m missing the snow this year. My brain is telling me to enjoy this beautiful weather, because it won’t last long. But my heart is missing the snow. And sleep. Stirling woke early this morning and had his Papaw playing with hot wheels in their living room before 7am.

We did spend most of the morning outside with the boys. Playing in the sunshine and what small remnants of snow are left over from last week. Snow is probably a generous term, it’s more like the heavy ice from a snow cone machine. Too wet for snowballs or building snowmen. The boys don’t care. They still splashed, stomped, and played away.

Seeing them today was a good reminder for me to enjoy whatever gift we are given each day. So I will enjoy this beautiful day and time we have visiting family and try to remember there will be other Christmases in our future to spend playing in the snow and relishing warmth of a hot mug in my hands.
