So, I realize that I still have to finish the History of Our Garden series; however, I have no self-control when it comes to seed catalogs. I usually purchase most or all of our seed staples from a local nursery at the end of the season. Stored in the garage fridge overwinter, I’ve never had an issue with germination the following spring.
But I love browsing through seed catalogs. The varieties, colors, textures, and flavors available to grow in the garden make produce from the grocery store seem unbearably boring. During these long, cold months, having something new and beautiful to look forward to growing for the next garden year definitely helps me feel like I’m still working out there. It brings a peace similar to what I feel when I’m working outside in the hot summer sun.
I love both of these companies, as they offer a HUGE variety of seeds and seedlings that are non-gmo, organic, and most (if not all) are heirloom varieties. I’ve been very pleased with seeds I’ve purchased from both Seed Savers Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and Grow Organic. I have also heard very good things about MIGardener, which is a small, family owned company. I don’t have any personal experience with them, but will be looking into their seeds before purchasing anything this year.
You could easily get yourself into trouble when ordering seeds, which is why I usually request the catalogs first. Wait a few weeks before placing an order. If I’m still super excited about a new variety, then I’ll add it into my cart online. If I were to jump directly online to shop, the beautiful striped, purple, and white varieties of tomatoes would entice me into going overboard. I’ve been put in seed-buying jail before by my husband. That won’t happen again! (Maybe!)
Are there any new exciting things you’re looking forward to trying? I’m hoping to try a new beet variety this year!
