We live in a very rural setting. Our main options for getting groceries are Walmart and Kroger, both of which are about 25 minutes away. They also have a very limited selection for organic produce and cooking supplies. This is part of the reason why we seem to be expanding our garden every year. Unfortunately, I simply can’t grow everything myself (and have yet to figure out cold storage). So when a friend who I know is VERY conscious of her family’s food sources posted on Facebook that she was trying out Misfits Market AND had a discount code, we decided to test it out!
What is Misfits Market?
Misfits Market is a produce sourcing company that works directly with organic farmers to collect their produce that doesn’t meet a grocery store’s immaculate standards. Their goal is to help reduce food waste by taking the ‘unwanted’ produce that would normally go to waste, and match it with customers who either don’t have access to quality organic produce or who simply cannot afford it. Since this produce would not generally get sold in stores, they are able to sell it at a good discount. Win for the farmer who still receives income for their handwork, win for the consumer who isn’t shelling out an arm and a leg to receive organic food.
How does their subscription service work?
You currently get to choose between two separate boxes and can add on select produce and pantry items that are available for that week.
- The Mischief: This is their small box. It will contain a mix of organic fruits, vegetables and occasionally herbs or mushrooms. You can expect between 10-13lbs of produce in each box. Regular price for this box is $22.
- The Madness: The large box. There will be a beautiful mix of organic produce anywhere from 18-22lbs with each delivery. Regular price for this box is $35.
Shipping for each box is $4.95.
Now for the extra bonus: You can sign up using our code: COOKWME-LB4JCJ at checkout and receive an EXTRA discount on your first box! This discount can vary depending on the week, but as of today it is currently an extra 25% off! Definitely use our code and see what the day offers! When you order with our code, not only do you receive an extra % off, but we do as well! It is, of course, a great incentive to share their product with others, but we have been so pleased with all that we’ve received that I would be telling everyone about this even if we didn’t receive a discount on our boxes.

What if I don’t need a weekly box of produce?
Their subscription service runs on a weekly or every other week schedule. But you can also enter your account and fully customize your delivery service by skipping as many weeks as you need in between deliveries. You are also not bound to their subscription and can easily cancel at anytime.
We currently go through a Madness box every two weeks and have recently changed to a weekly delivery. If I find we are not able to consume as much produce on a weekly basis, then I will drop back down to every other week. I will say, as a family of four, and one that cooks almost every meal from scratch, I doubt we will have any issues going through a large box on a weekly basis.
What drawbacks have we experienced?
Everything in life has it’s pros and cons! There haven’t been many so far with Misfits that we have encountered. A few times a tomato has split in transit, or a few pears have arrived bruised. We just make sure to use those the same day we received them. Another drawback is it’s not local. I’m a huge advocate for buying local to support local farmers and to reduce the amount of resources used for food travel; however, I try to balance cost and convenience with that decision and as of right now, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks for our family. Another possible negative for some is the variety you receive. I know many out there are picky eaters or don’t enjoy cooking (which is totally fine! Not everyone has to enjoy what I do!) You currently can’t customize your main box, so if you have any serious food allergies or aversions with produce, you may want to contact the company first.
The last drawback I can currently think of: They’re only available in 23 states, as of today. While I know they are working on opening up their services, they might not be available to you as of right now.
Personally, I enjoy receiving a variety of different things. There have been several occasions so far that I have to find new ways to use a vegetable that I’ve never even seen before!
This is not a sponsored post! We do receive a discount on our future produce boxes for everyone who uses our discount code at check out. If you choose to sign up, we thank you in advance!
